Here I was 10+ years ago, your typical law school graduate, if not a slightly sheltered one. Short of one embarrassing and frustrating experience ballroom dancing that my mother dragged me to years ago, I had never danced a day in my life. (Not counting my brief experiments when the bedroom door was locked and the blinds shut tight!)

I had neither the self-esteem nor confidence to do ANY type of dancing, much less something like Salsa. And if there was one thing I wasn’t, by any stretch of the imagination, it was a Ladies’ Man. No, I was the guy who would constantly see women I wanted to meet, but they always eluded me.

To make matters worse, I was in the process of starting a computer/video game company with several of my college buddies (so much for that law degree mom and dad paid for).

So you can guess how I spent most of my days… in front of a computer, 20 hours a day, seven days a week, obsessively trying to get my business off the ground. I had no social life and no prospects of one, not even in the distant future. I was sitting in a boring little business park, day in and day out, with little bugs flying around my head. (Really!) It was miserable.

Concerned that I might morph into a hopeless recluse for all of eternity, my brother Alex insisted I go along with him to a dance class one night.

Guess what? It didn’t do a darn thing for me. I felt awkward and self-conscious, like most beginners do. I felt inept and uncoordinated, like most beginners do. And I left thinking, “Well, I won’t do that again for a while”… like most beginners do.

Three weeks later my brother calls me again. This time he wants me to go to a hot new club he’s just discovered. “The teacher is terrific and the women are amazing,” he tells me. And, oh by the way, it’s a Salsa club.

I nearly laughed myself right out of my chair. A Salsa club? What the hell was that? There was no freakin’ way I’d go to a Salsa club!

Two days later, I found myself standing outside this Salsa club. (My steadfast nature was clearly serving me well.)

So there I am, walking up to the doors of this club, about to cross the threshold and prepared to waste the next hour stumbling around and having a terrible time, all so I can tell my brother the next morning “I told you so.”

And that’s when I heard it: the most passionate, electrifying music I’d ever encountered in my whole life. It had such a powerful effect on me, that it felt like a freight train slamming me square in the chest, nearly toppling me backward. Utterly unlike anything I’d ever heard before. I was blown away by the amazing sounds coming from inside of the club, and couldn’t wait to get in.

But as if the music wasn’t enough, what I witnessed when I walked through those doors truly changed my life.

In complete awe, I stood transfixed as the most beautiful, sensual dancers I ever saw put on a show with more grace, style, and passion, than I would have thought possible. And when I say passion, I really mean PASSION! It was downright steamy at times, with couples moving together as if they were one, their hips swaying in time to the music.

The very next day I signed up for Alex Da Silva’s class, and took my first Salsa lesson. By the end of the week I was taking classes every single day. I wasn’t progressing as fast as I wanted, but I loved every minute of it.

In fact, it became so consuming that my business partners started to get more than a little suspicious when I came back from my “dinner break” all hot and sweaty. But I wasn’t about to tell them I was Salsa dancing…and they didn’t ask.

So here I was, this shy, sheltered, workaholic, transformed into an absolute social butterfly… even a Don Juan type. As incredible as it might sound, I suddenly found myself with lovely ladies in my arms several nights a week, and I began dating on a regular basis. It was unbelievable how easy it was. Women who had once been out of my league and completely unattainable, suddenly weren’t anymore. Why? Because I exuded confidence. Trust me… women can smell confidence on a man a mile away. He’s either got it, or he doesn’t… and they know it.

It wasn’t long before my newfound confidence inspired a ripple effect in every aspect of my life. Not only was I more confident with women, I was more successful than ever at work, and my relationships with family and friends improved as well. I was just plain happier and everyone knew it!

That’s when I decided Salsa was going to be more than just a hobby in my life. I made it my career. I wanted to share with the world the joy I had discovered with Salsa. Within three years, I was teaching full time at my own school and in nightclubs across California.

But that didn’t fully satisfy me. I soon realized it just wasn’t possible for me to reach everyone who stood to benefit from Salsa with my little operation in San Francisco. There were just too many requests and not enough of me to go around.

Are you ready for this? I’m going to give you 10 reasons why most Salsa experts’ DVDs are dead wrong in everything they teach. How do I know this? Because I bought every Salsa, swing and tango DVD ever made, and you know what I found out? They’re disasters!

1. Ninety percent of the time you can’t even hear what the instructors are saying, the sound quality is so poor.
2. Only one in a million of them understand how to break down the movements for beginners.
3. None provide a picture-in-picture view to show you what the feet and hands are doing at every angle.
4. Most of them are painfully short… only 30 minutes!
5. And because they’re so short, they usually only have time to say, “Copy me.” You could go to a dance club, get the same thing, and pay less!
6. None of them include practice music, so when you finally do get on the dance floor, you have no idea what it’s like to move your body to anything but the numbers, “1…2…3…”
7. Most of the instructors do not understand the dynamics of Salsa dancing.
8. They either don’t know enough or don’t bother to teach you the basics of leading and following, a snafu that will get you into trouble on the dance floor.
9. The instructors make the mistake of thinking you’re watching their DVD to see how great they are, rather than to learn how to dance. So they show you complicated turns and maneuvers no novice has any hope of mastering.
10. And even if you do find one to teach you the proper mechanics, most instructors won’t show you how to use what you’ve learned in the real world. For example, they don’t teach the proper etiquette for asking a person to dance, the common mistakes made on the dance floor and how to recover from them, what to expect when you go to a club, etc.

They ‘rapid-fire’ taught one pattern after another expecting you to somehow ‘get it’.”
